Smart Glove for Robotic Inspection
Robotics are increasingly involved in multiple aspects of society, and the ongoing developments in robotics premise to continually improve the state of the human condition. This invention details an advance in robotics tailored for improving our current struggle in inspection and maintenance of infrastructure. The invention, which comprises mainly of a glove-like sheath for robotic manipulators, allow robots to inspect structures through simple mechanical contact. The glove is equipped with thin piezoelectric transducers that can generate stress waves onto the mechanical structure. Transducers on different fingers of the glove can measure generated stress waves as they are modulated by the inspected structure. Changes in the stress wave can be used to extract information about the structural condition. The glove does not require modifications to the robot and can be easily modified to fit different manipulators.
